Abduction | PNC Park — the ballgame that never stops for the boy running through it
kevin
The chase that anchors Abduction was not staged in an empty stadium. The production filmed at PNC Park during an actual Pirates–Mets game in the summer of 2010, which means the thirty-odd thousand people reacting around Taylor Lautner are simply a Pittsburgh crowd watching baseball, unbothered, holding beers, while a teenager sprints past them for his life. Nathan comes down the escalator and the game goes on behind him. That indifference is the best special effect in the movie.
Stand at the Federal Street gates on the North Shore and the geography of the sequence resolves itself immediately. The park sits low against the Allegheny, only two decks high, so the downtown skyline fills the gap above the outfield wall exactly as it does on screen. The Roberto Clemente statue keeps watch near the entrance, and the film gives it a small, strange part to play. Around the corner, the parking garage the story turns on is still an ordinary parking garage.
Come on a game day if you can. Tickets here remain some of the cheapest in Major League Baseball, and the walk over the Roberto Clemente Bridge, closed to cars before first pitch, delivers you to the same gates the camera used. Buy a Primanti sandwich, find a seat along the third-base line, and watch the city do the thing it was doing while the cameras rolled.
