Ambulance|Fashion District — Racks on the Sidewalk, Sirens Overhead

Ninety blocks of downtown Los Angeles sell clothing wholesale, and none of it is quiet. In the Fashion District — the Garment District until the name was polished in the 1990s — rolling racks come out of freight doors onto the sidewalk, box trucks double-park across Maple and Wall, and Santee Alley runs two narrow blocks of stalls shoulder to shoulder from Olympic down to Twelfth.

Ambulance was shot across this neighborhood, and the reason is visible from any corner. Bay had thirty-eight days and a citywide driving permit. He did not build a city; he took the one that was already moving. Supervising location manager Rob Gibson pulled permits for street after street and freeway corridor after freeway corridor so the ambulance could actually run through working traffic. Cutting to a block of the Fashion District mid-chase puts real cargo, real vendors, and real commerce in the frame, and it costs nothing to fake.

There is a second reason. The film's day never leaves Los Angeles, and this is the part of downtown that most obviously has a job.

Santee Alley is open daily, roughly ten to six, cash friendly and crowded on weekends. Walk it end to end, then step one block west onto Santee Street where the wholesale showrooms are. That is the version of the district the cameras caught: less shopping, more loading dock.
