American Gangster|Kings County Courthouse — The Deal at the End of the Table

The last act of American Gangster is not a shootout. It is paperwork. Frank Lucas, convicted and looking at the rest of his life, sits down opposite Richie Roberts — by now a prosecutor rather than a cop — and starts naming people. What follows is the part of the story Hollywood usually leaves out: the informant tapes, the sealed indictments, the systematic dismantling of the detectives who had been taxing the trade for years.

Those courtroom scenes were shot at 360 Adams Street in Downtown Brooklyn, the Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term. It was completed in the late 1950s in the flat, sober institutional idiom of that moment: a long limestone box on a granite base, columns pressed almost back into the wall, every proportion calculated to make one person feel like a docket number. It stands across Cadman Plaza from Brooklyn Borough Hall, the 1848 Greek Revival building it makes no attempt to compete with.

That contrast is useful for a film about who gets to own what. One building is civic pride with a cupola. The other is the machinery.

You can go in. It is a working courthouse, so you clear security, but the lobby and the public corridors are open and the civil calendar runs on most weekday mornings — anyone may sit at the back and watch. Ridley Scott ended two and a half hours of chinchilla coats and Bangkok riverboats in an ordinary room where ordinary deals get made. Sit in one for twenty minutes and the ending gets better.
