Assassination Attempt on President Andrew Jackson

On January 30, 1835, President Andrew Jackson narrowly survived an assassination attempt at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. As Jackson was leaving a funeral service for a congressman in the Capitol Rotunda, Richard Lawrence, an unemployed house painter, approached him. Lawrence pulled out a pistol and fired at Jackson, but the gun misfired. Undeterred, Lawrence pulled out a second pistol, which also misfired. The enraged Jackson, known for his fiery temper, charged at Lawrence with his cane, while bystanders, including Congressman Davy Crockett, subdued and disarmed the would-be assassin.

This incident marked the first time a sitting U.S. president had faced an assassination attempt. Subsequent investigation revealed that both pistols misfired due to the humid weather affecting the gunpowder. Lawrence was found to be insane and was institutionalized for the rest of his life. The attempt on Jackson's life highlighted the vulnerabilities in presidential security at the time and showcased Jackson's resilient and confrontational nature, which further solidified his reputation as a strong and determined leader.
