On September 18, 2014, President Petro Poroshenko addressed a joint meeting of the United States Congress in the House Chamber of the U.S. Capitol.

The House historian and the Congressional Record independently fix the date, the setting, and his status as the invited president of Ukraine.

The official record notes that the House reconvened for the meeting, members of the Senate entered the chamber, and Poroshenko was announced shortly after 10 a.m.

His appearance came little more than three months after his inauguration and during the first year of the armed conflict that followed Russia's annexation of Crimea.

Poroshenko used the address to seek broader American political, economic, and security support for Ukraine.

The speech placed Ukraine's crisis before lawmakers in the institution that controlled appropriations and legislation, turning a diplomatic visit into a direct appeal to both houses of Congress.

Later that day, Poroshenko met President Barack Obama in the Oval Office, where the two administrations discussed sovereignty, security assistance, economic support, and reforms.
