Biography | Petro Poroshenko — The St George Handover That Marked Church Independence

On January 6, 2019, Petro Poroshenko attended the Epiphany liturgy at St George's Patriarchal Cathedral in Istanbul when Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew handed a tomos of autocephaly to Metropolitan Epiphanius.

Reuters, the official presidential photo archive, and the cathedral's own institutional history independently establish the date, participants, and setting in the Phanar district.

Bartholomew had signed the decree the previous day, and the Sunday handover presented the document formally to the head of the newly established Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

The tomos recognized that church as autocephalous, meaning that its senior hierarchy would govern without subordination to another national church authority.

Epiphanius had been elected at a unification council in Kyiv in December 2018, after years in which multiple Orthodox jurisdictions operated in Ukraine.

Poroshenko had supported the request for autocephaly as president and accompanied the Ukrainian delegation to Istanbul, making his presence part of the state's public role in the process.

The ceremony was religious rather than a presidential act, however, because the Ecumenical Patriarch issued the tomos and Metropolitan Epiphanius received it on behalf of the church.

That boundary matters in a biography of a political figure because Poroshenko helped pursue the outcome but did not possess the ecclesiastical authority to create or recognize an autocephalous church himself.

Supporters connected the change to Ukrainian sovereignty and institutional separation from Moscow, especially after Russia's annexation of Crimea and the war in eastern Ukraine.

The Russian Orthodox Church and the Moscow-aligned church in Ukraine disputed the process, so the handover did not erase religious division or settle every question of recognition across world Orthodoxy.

What happened at St George's was nevertheless a concrete institutional milestone: a signed decree passed from the Ecumenical Patriarch to the primate of the new Ukrainian church in a public liturgy.

The cathedral was an exact and symbolically powerful venue because it serves as the principal church of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
