People treat KLA as a Milpitas process-control house that always printed KLAC after a finished Nasdaq book.
The 1980 issuer was KLA Instruments Corporation, founded on 9 July 1975 by Kenneth Levy and Robert Anderson and incorporated in 1976 to sell reticle-inspection systems to semiconductor plants.
Company histories and later SEC prospectuses date the initial public offering to October 1980 and place the common stock in the over-the-counter market under KLAC from that offering.
Market-data services commonly start a continuous KLAC series on 8 October 1980.
A 1994 company prospectus stated that the common stock had traded on the Nasdaq National Market under KLAC since the 1980 offering.
In 1997 the issuer combined with Tencor Instruments and later shortened the listed name to KLA Corporation while keeping the same letters.
The letters KLAC still open on the Nasdaq Global Select Market.
The mechanism is a 1980 over-the-counter instrument IPO that kept one ticker through the Tencor combination and later Nasdaq tier changes.
The pin is the public Times Square facade of Nasdaq MarketSite, the present street marker for the tape that prints KLAC.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
