People treat Illinois Tool Works as a Glenview campus that always printed ITW after a finished fastener book.
The company was founded in Chicago in 1912 after Byron L. Smith advertised for a manufacturing business.
ITW's own timeline places the New York Stock Exchange listing in the 1970s, the decade the company also acquired Devcon.
An earlier company history page, archived from the official site, dated the listing to shortly after the fiftieth anniversary and gave an initial stock price of 26 dollars.
Market-data services that maintain a continuous ITW tape commonly start that series on 13 March 1973.
The company's present site does not reprint a first-day print or a share count for the listing session.
The letters ITW still open on the New York Stock Exchange.
The mechanism is a mid-century tool-and-fastener book moving from a closely held Chicago manufacturer onto the Big Board as auto and construction demand widened.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange on that listed book.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
