People treat Johnson Controls as a Cork building-systems house that always printed JCI after a finished New York book.
The October 1965 issuer was Johnson Service Company, a Milwaukee controls firm that had traded over the counter before the Big Board listing.
The company's own history dates the first New York session to 11 October 1965.
A Milwaukee Sentinel report cited in that history said 1,608,814 common shares, plus 34,800 shares reserved for qualified options, were listed that day.
The same account says the stock closed at 43 U.S. dollars a share on the first session, in 1965 dollars.
The tape printed JSC until December 1974, when Johnson Service Company became Johnson Controls, Inc. and the letters changed to JCI.
On 2 September 2016 Johnson Controls, Inc. merged into a Tyco International structure.
The old common stock was suspended before the open on 6 September 2016, and ordinary shares of Johnson Controls International plc opened the same morning under the same letters JCI.
The letters JCI still open on this exchange.
The mechanism is an over-the-counter controls stock moving onto the Big Board under one ticker, then keeping those later letters across a rename and a cross-border holding-company merger.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange on the morning the JSC book opened.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
