Biography | Freddy Heineken — Buried in the Dunes at Noordwijk General Cemetery

He died of pneumonia on 3 January 2002, at home in Noordwijk, aged 78.

The house is still a private place.

The cemetery is not.

Algemene Begraafplaats Noordwijk sits at Oude Zeeweg 32, a walled square laid out in 1829 by Salomon van der Paauw and later terraced into the dunes.

Freddy Heineken was buried here.

So were the writer Albert Verwey and, in Commonwealth plots, sailors and airmen from two world wars.

The exact burial day is not in the obituaries that record the death.

His only child, Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken, inherited the controlling stake in Heineken Holding.

He had already left the executive chair in 1989.

He was still chairman of the holding company's management board when he died.

The cemetery keeps posted hours.
