Biography | Tim Cook — The Cupertino Campus Where the Board Named Him Chief Executive
kevin
People treat the 2011 change at Apple as a sudden hospital story.
The board vote that made Cook chief executive was taken in Cupertino on a Wednesday after the market closed.
On 24 August 2011 Steve Jobs resigned as chief executive and asked the board to carry out its succession plan.
The board named Cook, then chief operating officer, as chief executive the same day.
It elected Jobs chairman and appointed Cook to the board.
Apple's current report on Form 8-K, dated that day, records the four acts and an award of one million restricted stock units to Cook.
Headquarters in 2011 was the Infinite Loop campus at 1 Infinite Loop.
The six buildings around the private U-shaped street had been the company's research and headquarters ground since 1993.
Cook had joined that campus in March 1998 as senior vice president of operations, after IBM, Intelligent Electronics, and a short stretch at Compaq.
He had already run the company as acting chief during Jobs's medical leaves in 2009 and 2011.
Jobs died on 5 October 2011.
The campus still stands on the southeast corner of Interstate 280 and De Anza Boulevard.
Apple later moved the headquarters function to Apple Park, a mile to the east.
This pin marks a dated board action at the old headquarters, not a present office routine.
Cook is a living executive.
