Tokyo Disneyland opened on 15 April 1983 in the rain.
It was the first Disney park built outside the United States.
Card Walker had already stepped down as chief executive in February.
He stayed on as chairman so he could stand here for the opening.
The ribbon cutting was planned in front of the gates.
Weather moved it under the glass of World Bazaar.
Walker and Oriental Land president Masatomo Takahashi cut the tape with Mickey Mouse between them.
Takahashi told the first guests that Tokyo Disneyland was open.
Walker gave the dedication that morning.
To all of you who come to this happy place, welcome.
Here you will discover enchanted lands of Fantasy and Adventure, Yesterday and Tomorrow.
May Tokyo Disneyland be an eternal source of joy, laughter, inspiration, and imagination to the people of the world.
And may this magical kingdom be an enduring symbol of the spirit of cooperation and friendship between the great nations of Japan and the United States of America.
The park is owned by the Oriental Land Company and licensed from Disney.
That structure was the deal Walker had signed.
About three thousand guests came through the gates that first wet morning.
A piece of the opening-day ribbon is kept in the Walt Disney Archives.
Walker left the chairmanship weeks later.
The castle a visitor sees from the plaza is the park he opened from Maihama.
