Biography|Goh Choon Phong — Named Chief Executive Here on New Year's Day

People remember the press release.

The title changed inside this headquarters on a dated New Year's morning.

On 3 September 2010 the board of Singapore Airlines announced that Executive Vice President Goh Choon Phong would succeed Chew Choon Seng when Chew retired at the end of December.

Goh joined the board on 1 October 2010.

He became chief executive on 1 January 2011, still based at Airline House, 25 Airline Road, Singapore 819829.

He was forty-seven, twenty years inside the group, and coming off four years as president of SIA Cargo and a few months as executive vice president for marketing and the regions.

Reuters and the company's own statement both fix those dates.

The building did not change address.

What changed was the person who answered for a full-service carrier that had just come through the 2008 slump and still had not met the next decade's shocks — the pandemic grounding, the SilkAir merger into the mainline, and the collapse of Tigerair into Scoot under Budget Aviation Holdings, which he chairs.

Fiscal 2023-24 later printed a group net profit of S$2.68 billion, a record the company attributed to the recovery years of his tenure.

A visitor can stand on Airline Road and see the same corporate campus the 2010 announcement came from.

The public fact is simpler: the scholar who came back from Tech Square in 1990 took the top job in the same compound on the first morning of 2011.
