Hamers holds a Master of Science in business econometrics and operations research from Tilburg University. ING's own executive profile repeated that wording while he was chief executive.

The exact graduation year is not in the public record. What is dated is the exit: by 1989 he was in an ABN Amro trainee programme, after a short research stint at this same university, a logistics post at General Motors Belgium near Antwerp, and accountancy work in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Econometrics at Tilburg was not a finishing school for future bank spokesmen. It was a quantitative course in models, optimisation, and the kind of operations research that treats a balance sheet as a system.

The School of Economics and Management now sits in the Koopmans building, named for the Dutch econometrician Tjalling Koopmans, on the Warandelaan campus.

The twelve-storey block opened in 1972 to a design by Jos Bedaux. It is the building that still houses the faculty that taught the subject he studied.

The later nickname in the financial press — the digital banker, the man who shrank the branch network — sits on this training, not on a law degree or an MBA from outside the country.
