Biography | Rudolf Fredrik Berg — Sweden’s First Cement Works Put Him in Charge at Twenty-Six

The stockholmer who stepped off in Skåne in 1873 was twenty-six and, by his own later standard, underqualified.
Malmö stad’s biography is blunt about it: few credentials, good references, and a job as disponent of Skånska Cement AB, whose factory sat here on Lomma harbour.
Svenskt biografiskt lexikon dates the appointment to 14 March 1873. The company itself was newer still. It had been formed in 1871 and had begun making Portland cement at Lomma the following year — the first works of its kind in Sweden.
The site was not empty. Frans Henrik Kockum’s brickworks had already used the clay. Lime came by water from Limhamn and from Saltholm. Berg’s task was to make the new kiln pay.
He stayed in the job until he died. Under him the Lomma works ran until 1905, when production moved wholly to a larger plant at Limhamn.
What stands here now is not the kiln. Housing and a marina occupy the harbour. A drying shed from the brick era, the Torkladan, carried a relocated plaque that read that Sweden’s first cement factory was raised on this ground in 1872 and ran until 1905.
The shed burned in 2022. Lomma kommun later decided to take the ruin down. The visitor should expect a marked industrial shoreline, not a standing factory.
Berg did not treat Lomma as a stop. He used the harbour years to learn the limestone at Limhamn, and that knowledge is what let him move the whole industry west.
