Racing | Formula 1 | 1972 Italian Grand Prix — Fittipaldi Secures His First Title at Monza

On 10 September 1972, Formula 1 arrived at Autodromo Nazionale Monza with a championship at stake and a newly interrupted circuit. In agreement with the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, Monza had installed two temporary chicanes: one on the approach to Curva Grande and another before the Ascari, or Vialone, bend. The altered road course measured 5.775 kilometres and replaced the 5.750-kilometre layout used in 1971.

Emerson Fittipaldi qualified sixth in the No. 6 Lotus-Ford, 0.640 seconds slower than Jacky Ickx’s Ferrari pole time of 1:35.650. Jackie Stewart, Fittipaldi’s principal title rival, retired at the start. Ickx and Clay Regazzoni led the early contest for Ferrari, while Fittipaldi worked forward from the third row.

Ickx set the race’s fastest lap, 1:36.300 on lap 44, but retired late. Fittipaldi took over the lead and completed 55 laps in 1:29:58.400. Mike Hailwood finished second for Surtees-Ford, 14.500 seconds behind, and Denny Hulme was third for McLaren-Ford at 23.800 seconds. The official final classification records no penalty changing that leading order.

The victory secured Fittipaldi’s first World Drivers’ Championship with two races still to run. It was the decisive result of a season in which the official final standings list him on 61 points, ahead of Stewart on 45 and Hulme on 39. At Monza, the title was settled not by another flat-out slipstream finish, but on Monza’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix layout with speed-control chicanes.
