Racing | Formula 1 | 1976 Japanese Grand Prix — Hunt Finishes Third and Wins the Title at Fuji

On 24 October 1976, Formula 1 arrived at Fuji Speedway for the sixteenth and final round of a season reduced to a three-point contest between Niki Lauda and James Hunt. The meeting was billed locally as the F1 World Championship in Japan; Formula 1’s archive records it as the Japanese Grand Prix.

The race used Fuji’s shortened 4.359-kilometre configuration, not the original six-kilometre course with its banked first corner. The banking had been taken out of racing use, and the 1976–1977 layout turned right from the start-and-finish straight toward Daiichi before rejoining the established circuit.

Mario Andretti put the Lotus-Ford on pole in 1 minute 12.770 seconds. Hunt qualified the McLaren-Ford second, 0.030 seconds slower, with Lauda’s Ferrari third.

Heavy rain and fog covered the circuit on race day. Independent accounts describe standing water and streams crossing the track. Lauda returned to the pits after two laps and withdrew; the official classification lists him as not classified after completing those two laps.

Hunt led much of the early race, but the changing conditions and a late tyre problem brought him back to the pits. He rejoined behind the title-scoring positions, passed enough cars in the closing laps, and finished third—initially believing he had fallen short.

Andretti completed 73 laps in 1 hour 43 minutes 58.860 seconds to win. Patrick Depailler was classified second and Hunt third, both one lap behind. The official Formula 1 result and the independent classification agree on that podium, with no later penalty changing the first three places.

Third place awarded Hunt four points. The final championship table therefore read Hunt 69, Lauda 68, making the finish at Fuji the place where Hunt secured his first and only Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.
