Racing|MotoGP|2009 Catalan Grand Prix — Rossi Passes Lorenzo at Montmeló’s Final Corner
kevin
On 14 June 2009, the MotoGP class contested round six of its seventeen-round season at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmeló. The race covered 25 laps of the 4.727-kilometre Grand Prix configuration, a total of 118.175 kilometres.
Jorge Lorenzo started from pole on the No. 99 Fiat Yamaha Team YZR-M1, with teammate Valentino Rossi alongside him in second. Their pace had been closely matched throughout the weekend, and the two exchanged the lead repeatedly while Casey Stoner’s Ducati dropped away from the fight at the front.
Lorenzo began the final lap ahead, but Rossi continued attacking rather than settling for second. At the circuit’s last corner, Rossi placed the No. 46 Yamaha inside his teammate and held the line to the finish, completing the pass only moments before the chequered flag.
The official finishing time was 43 minutes 11.897 seconds. Lorenzo crossed 0.095 seconds later, and Stoner finished third, 8.884 seconds behind Rossi; Andrea Dovizioso was fourth, only 0.052 seconds behind Stoner. The published final classification records no post-race time penalty or exclusion that altered the podium.
The victory was Rossi’s second of the season and his 99th across all Grand Prix classes. It also produced an extraordinary championship position after six rounds: Rossi, Lorenzo and Stoner were level on 106 points, with Rossi ranked first through the countback rules.
The venue was then officially known as the Circuit de Catalunya; it now operates as the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The circuit opened at Montmeló on 10 September 1991 and added motorcycle Grand Prix racing to its calendar the following year. The 2009 race used the 4.727-kilometre pre-2017 motorcycle course, preserving the fast final sector in which Rossi made the decisive move.
