3 Days to Kill|Avenue George V — the hotel where the job catches up with him

Avenue George V runs three hundred metres from the Champs-Élysées down to the Seine and manages, in that short distance, to hold more money per square metre than almost any street in France. Number 31 is the Hôtel George V, opened in 1928, art deco behind a limestone face, with a courtyard the florists redo every week. The film uses it the way thrillers have always used grand hotels: as a place where a man in a good coat can walk through a lobby without being asked anything, and where a confrontation can happen twenty feet from a concierge who will never mention it.

The avenue is worth walking on its own terms. It was cut through in the 1850s as Avenue de l'Alma and renamed for the British king in 1918, and the buildings are Haussmann's rulebook applied with a very large budget — mansard roofs, continuous balconies on the fifth floor, stone that gets scrubbed. The American Cathedral sits halfway down with a Gothic spire that has no business being there and improves the street anyway.

You will not get past the George V's doorman without a reason, and you do not need one. The scene lives on the pavement and in the courtyard entrance, both of which are public. The bar is open to anyone willing to pay for a cocktail, which is the honest version of access here.

What the location gives the film is friction. Ethan spends the story in stairwells and cheap rooms and a squatted apartment. Put him in this avenue and everything about him — the coat, the cough, the errand — reads wrong, which is precisely the point.
