About Schmidt|Johnny's Café, Omaha — Thirty-Two Years and a Prime Rib

The retirement dinner is the cruellest scene in the film and it was shot in a room where people still eat steak. Johnny's Café sits at 4702 South 27th Street, on the edge of what was once the Omaha stockyards, and it has been serving beef since Frank Kawa opened it in 1922 — close enough to the killing floor that the meat arrived on the hoof. Payne used the banquet room. Warren sits through the toasts, the plaque, the friend who tells him his life has meant something, and says almost nothing.

The stockyards are gone. The restaurant is not. It is still family-run, still dark-panelled, still the kind of place where the waiter calls the cut by name and the salad arrives before you ask. Order the prime rib and take the booth rather than the bar.

What lands, sitting there, is how well the room does the job the scene needs: warm, generous, entirely sincere, and no help at all to the man it is honouring.
