After Earth | Humboldt Redwoods State Park — crash-landing in the tallest forest on Earth
kevin
Pull off at Weott on the Avenue of the Giants and the light arrives already spent, strained down through three hundred feet of coast redwood before it reaches the sword ferns at your boots. That green half-dark is what M. Night Shyamalan's crew drove up the 101 for. In spring 2012 the production spent roughly two weeks inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park, using its 53,000 acres — more than 17,000 of them uncut old growth — as the Earth that humanity walked away from a thousand years earlier.
The choice was not decoration. The film needed a planet that had gone on without people and won, and the Bull Creek and Avenue of the Giants groves already look like a world that has stopped taking instructions. Trunks go up past the frame line. Fallen giants lie across the slope with root plates the size of houses. Nothing here is scaled for a boy carrying a cutlass.
Executive producer Bennett Walsh described the location logic plainly at the time: they went for the look, but the look had to come with infrastructure — road access, staging ground, a place to put trucks. Humboldt had both, which is why the crash-site wilderness is real timber rather than a green screen.
Walk the Founders Grove loop, which takes about twenty minutes on flat duff, and you get the film's central sensation for free: the sound drops away. Traffic on the Avenue is a hundred metres off and you cannot hear it. That silence is the location doing the acting.
