The Age of Adaline | Fairmont Hotel Vancouver — the New Year's Eve she almost walks away from

Every December Adaline picks a new name, a new apartment, a new city. The New Year's Eve party is where that plan starts to fail: she arrives intending to disappear afterwards, and Ellis will not let the evening stay anonymous.

The hotel is the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver at 900 West Georgia, the third building to carry that name. Canadian National began it in 1928, the Depression stopped work for most of a decade, and it finally opened in May 1939 in time for the visit of King George VI. It is château style done in Indiana limestone, sixteen storeys under a steep copper roof gone green, with carved gargoyles and ship's prows near the roofline that most people on the sidewalk never look up to see. The lobby keeps the chandeliers and the dark wood; the Notch8 bar off it is the easiest way in for a visitor with no room key.

Location logs from the shoot also place a taxi pickup one block east at 801 West Georgia, so the walk between the two is the character's actual route out of the party.

Go on a wet night, which in Vancouver is most nights between November and March. Stand across Georgia at the corner of Hornby and look up at the copper roof with the streetlight catching the rain on it. Then walk the block east. It takes ninety seconds, and it is the distance Adaline spends deciding not to leave.
