All the Money in the World|The Capitoline Museums — A Collector Among His Marbles

Michelangelo laid out this square in the 1530s so that everyone climbing the Cordonata would arrive slightly off balance, facing a trapezoid that only resolves into a rectangle once you are standing on it. The production filmed inside the Capitoline Museums, on Piazza del Campidoglio, and it is the right room for a man like J. Paul Getty to walk through.

He is the reason the film needs a museum at all. Getty bought antiquity the way other men bought companies — bronzes, Greek marbles, a Roman villa's worth of statuary shipped to Malibu — while haggling over the ransom for his own grandson and installing a payphone for guests at Sutton Place. Christopher Plummer plays that contradiction quietly. The camera puts him next to objects nobody can price and lets you draw the line yourself.

The museums are the oldest public collection in the world, opened in 1734 on a papal donation of bronzes made in 1471. The Capitoline Wolf is here. So is the colossal hand and head of Constantine in the courtyard of Palazzo dei Conservatori, and the original gilt-bronze Marcus Aurelius on horseback, brought indoors in 1990 and replaced outside by a copy.

Buy the ticket, then find the window in the Tabularium corridor. It frames the whole Roman Forum in one arch, and no photograph you have seen prepares you for it.
