Biography|Dario Amodei — On the Disrupt Stage at Moscone West

People who meet Dario Amodei as the chief executive of Anthropic tend to picture a closed laboratory.

On 20 September 2023 he sat on a public stage instead, inside Moscone West at 800 Howard Street.

The occasion was the thirteenth TechCrunch Disrupt, which ran 19–21 September across the Moscone complex in San Francisco's South of Market.

Organizers opened the Moscone West lobby at 7:30 a.m. on the first morning.

The session that day was listed as a talk on letting AI find its best self.

TechCrunch senior writer Devin Coldewey sat with him under the stage lights.

Official photographs taken around midday for the conference show the two of them in the hall.

Amodei had co-founded Anthropic in 2021 after leaving OpenAI, and by this date he was its chief executive.

The firm had been announced on 28 May 2021 as an AI safety and research company.

The Disrupt program framed the hour around whether systems that large could be built with limits that held, and still be used.

TechCrunch posted the video the same evening. It runs twenty-nine minutes.

This is not the founding day and not a private office.

It is a named public hall in the city where he was born, on a trade-show stage, taking questions in front of a crowd.

Moscone West opened in 2003 as a three-level hall across Fourth Street from Moscone North.

The pin is that building, not the underground halls under Yerba Buena Gardens.

Four months earlier he had been photographed at 10 Downing Street with other laboratory chiefs.

The two dates belong to the same public season. One was a government door. This one was a conference floor in his home city.
