American Pie 2 | Main Street, Seal Beach — Three Blocks of Invented Grand Harbor

Grand Harbor does not exist. Main Street in Seal Beach does, and it is the reason the invented summer town in American Pie 2 feels specific rather than generic. The street runs three short blocks from Pacific Coast Highway straight down to the water, and the production shot the arrival there — the carload of nineteen-year-olds turning in, the town revealing itself in one unbroken sightline.

That sightline is the whole trick. Stand at the top of Main Street and the ocean is already visible at the bottom of it. Nothing tall interrupts. The storefronts are one and two storeys, mostly wood and stucco, occupied by hardware, ice cream, a bookshop, bars that were bars long before the crew arrived. At the end sits the pier, the second-longest wooden pier in California, rebuilt more than once after the storms of 1935 and 1983 took it apart.

Seal Beach has resisted the thing that happened to every comparable stretch of Orange County coast. There is no promenade of chain flagships here. The gambling halls of the Prohibition years — as many as six on this street between 1928 and 1939 — are gone, but the scale they were built at survives.

Walk it downhill in late afternoon, slowly, the way the camera does. It takes about six minutes and the ocean gets larger the entire time.
