American Hustle | Hotel Chelsea — Iron Balconies Above a Meeting That Was Always a Trap

Philip Hubert finished this building in 1884 as a cooperative apartment house: eleven stories of red brick split into five vertical bays, flower-ornamented iron balconies running from the second floor to the eighth, a high mansard roof and a pyramidal slate cap over the central pavilion. It became the Chelsea Hotel, then a legend, then a construction site for eleven years.

American Hustle uses the exterior on West 23rd Street to place the meeting with Carl Elway — the scene in which the con is already being run on the con artists, though nobody in the frame knows it yet. New York in 1978 gets established in a single shot of that facade, because the facade never needed updating to look like 1978. Or 1958. Or now.

It reopened as a working hotel in 2022 after a renovation that began in 2011, roughly 155 rooms, with El Quijote back on the ground floor. Stand across 23rd between Seventh and Eighth and count the balconies floor by floor. That ironwork is why the shot lands: there is no other block face in Manhattan shaped quite like it.
