American History X|Speedway at 18th Avenue — The Alley Where the Gun Goes in the Trash

Speedway is not a street so much as a service alley — the working seam that runs one block inland from Ocean Front Walk, where Venice keeps its garages, its dumpsters, its power lines and its back doors. It is the least photogenic strip in a neighborhood that lives on being photogenic, and that is exactly why the film uses it.

This is where Derek, newly out and trying to unmake himself, drops the gun and keeps walking, and where Danny catches up with him and refuses to let it go. The argument happens between parked cars and roll-up doors. No ocean in the shot. No palms doing anything decorative. Two brothers on cracked concrete, one of them talking too fast because he is still nineteen and has decided who he is.

Walk it at 18th Avenue, one block off the basketball courts, and the scale surprises you. The alley is narrow enough that a raised voice carries the length of it. Garage doors are painted over in a dozen layers. Wheelie bins sit where the crew set them, more or less. Three minutes' walk west and you are in the loudest tourist stretch on the California coast; here it is mostly the sound of somebody's window air conditioner.

Venice was still visibly a working, contested neighborhood when Kaye filmed here in the spring of 1997, and the alley has kept more of that than the boardwalk has. Come around the back and you get the version of the place the postcards leave out — which is the version the film wanted.
