American History X|2206 Meade Place — The House, and the Curb Outside It

Meade Place is a stub of a street off Venice Boulevard, two short blocks of modest houses with driveways that run right down to the asphalt. Nothing about it announces itself. That is why the production chose it, and it is why the scene shot at its curb is still, twenty-eight years on, the hardest ninety seconds in American cinema to sit through.

The house at 2206 is the Vinyard family home — the dinner table where Derek detonates the argument about Rodney King, the porch, the bedroom where Danny writes the paper that frames the whole film. Outside it, at the kerb, is where three men try to take Derek's truck at night and where he does the thing the movie then spends two hours refusing to let anyone forget. Kaye filmed it in black and white, from Danny's window, with the camera doing almost nothing. The restraint is the violence.

It is a private home on a public street. Look from the sidewalk, keep your voice down, and do not photograph through anyone's windows — people live here, and they did not sign up for the film. What you will notice is that the geometry holds exactly: the width of the road, the height of the kerb, the sightline from the upstairs window down to the gutter. Kaye shot the whole sequence within a few metres of where you are standing.

Two blocks away the Venice canals fill with tour groups. Here it is bins on collection day and somebody's dog. The ordinariness is the thing the film was after — the argument that a street this unremarkable is where it starts.
