American History X|Lincoln Heights Jail — Where Derek Stops Being Certain

Derek serves three years for voluntary manslaughter, and the film's real hinge is not the curb or the courtroom. It is the laundry room, the shower block and the rooftop exercise yard, where the Brotherhood he expected to protect him turns on him and a Black inmate named Lamont — who never once lectures him — becomes the only person willing to talk. He goes in sure of everything. He comes out with nothing to say.

Those interiors and the roof were shot at the old Lincoln Heights Jail, 421 North Avenue 19, in the industrial bend of the Los Angeles River northeast of downtown. It opened in 1931, five storeys of Art Deco built for $5 million and 625 men, then expanded in the early 1950s to hold 2,800. It closed in 1965. In between it earned a place in the city's worst memory: in December 1951 LAPD officers beat seven prisoners inside these walls, the incident that became known as Bloody Christmas and that later fed L.A. Confidential.

The building is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, designated in November 1993. From 1979 to 2014 the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts kept theatre alive inside it. Redevelopment into a mixed-use Makers District has been proposed and repeatedly delayed, so for now it stands mostly empty, its windows barred, its concrete streaked — which is why productions keep coming back. Nightmare on Elm Street, Con Air and Iron Man 2 all used it.

You can walk the perimeter on North Avenue 19 in daylight; the interior is not open to visitors. Do that, and the thing that lands is the scale. It is enormous, and it is silent, and the roof where Derek loses his certainty is up there behind the parapet with nothing on it but sky.
