American History X|Venice High School — Rydell High With the Lights Turned Down

Twenty years before Danny Vinyard walked these corridors, this campus was Rydell High. The sock hop, the bleachers, the summer nights — Grease was shot here in 1978, and the school has been trading on it ever since. Kaye borrowed the same Art Deco buildings and drained every ounce of the nostalgia out of them.
Venice High School opened in 1911 as Venice Union Polytechnic and moved to 13000 Venice Boulevard a decade later. The 1933 Long Beach earthquake wrecked the original neo-Romanesque halls, and what replaced them in 1935 is what you see now: low, reinforced, streamlined Art Deco, laid out around courtyards on a twenty-nine-acre campus. Those 1935 buildings are still in daily use by students.
In the film this is Venice Beach High, where Danny hands in the paper his history teacher demanded and where, in a restroom on an ordinary Monday morning, the film ends. Kaye gives the shooting no build and no score. A door, a boy, a sound, and then Derek on the floor of a school bathroom holding his brother. Everything the previous two hours argued about collapses into that one room.
Come on a weekday and you will be looking from the sidewalk on Venice Boulevard — it is a working public high school, not a set, and the old gymnasium was demolished around 2022. The facade is the part that matters anyway. Stand across the boulevard at the hour the bell goes and watch fifteen hundred teenagers come out of a building that has now played the happiest and the bleakest version of American adolescence on the same steps.
