Biography | Albert Bourla — The Veterinary School That Gave Pfizer's Chief Two Doctorates

People file Pfizer's chief as a New York product who arrived with the vaccine years.

The named degrees are on this campus in Thessaloniki.

Albert Bourla was born in the city on 21 October 1961.

Wikipedia, later company biographies, and Greek press profiles all give that date and city.

He is a son of Thessaloniki's Sephardic Jewish community, a community the German occupation almost erased.

His parents survived that destruction.

No public street number is on the record a visitor can stand on.

What the record does fix is the school.

The School of Veterinary Medicine of Aristotle University opened in 1950 and for years was the only veterinary faculty in Greece.

Its laboratories and secretariat sit on the main university campus near the city centre.

The clinical buildings are a separate cluster by the railway station, on Stavrou Voutyra Street.

Bourla took a doctorate in veterinary medicine here in 1985.

He stayed for a Ph.D. in the biotechnology of reproduction, finished in 1991.

Pfizer's later proxy statements and the Genesis Prize biography both name those two credentials and this faculty.

The 1991 thesis, catalogued by the university, concerns melatonin implants and the freezability of Karagouniki ram semen.

The catalogued title is the actual paper.

Wall Street Journal reporting, relayed in Greek in 2024, places him still doing animal-health research on this campus in 1993 when a recruiter offered a sabbatical at Pfizer in Greece.

He took it.
