On 14 June 2023, Silvio Berlusconi’s coffin entered Milan Cathedral for a state funeral held on Italy’s national day of mourning.

The Archdiocese of Milan announced the ceremony for 15:00 in the Duomo and named Archbishop Mario Delpini as its presider. The Quirinal’s official record confirms the same date, place and celebrant, and records President Sergio Mattarella’s attendance.

Two days had passed since Berlusconi’s death in Milan. The Italian government ordered flags on public buildings to remain at half-mast from 12 through 14 June and designated the funeral day for national mourning.

Inside the cathedral, the liturgy brought a political career built on mass communication into a very different kind of public space. The coffin stood below the immense Gothic nave, surrounded by family, officeholders and invited mourners, while crowds gathered outside in Piazza del Duomo.

The ceremony was not a verdict on every part of Berlusconi’s life. He had led several Italian governments across three periods between 1994 and 2011, and he remained a figure who attracted unusually strong loyalty and opposition.

A state funeral therefore carried two meanings at once. It honored a former prime minister according to public protocol, while the scale of the setting revealed how deeply his business, media and political careers had entered Italy’s national story.
