Biography | Charles Dickens — The Marshalsea Wall That Held His Father

On 20 February 1824 John Dickens was committed to the Marshalsea as a debtor.
He owed a baker £40 and 10 shillings.
Charles was twelve.
He left school and pasted labels on blacking pots at Warren's warehouse near Hungerford Stairs, a site later erased by the Embankment.
In April his mother and the younger children moved into the prison with John.
John left on 28 May after an inheritance from his own mother opened the way for release.
The prison closed in 1842.
The buildings came down in the 1870s.
What stands is the southern boundary wall along Angel Place, against St George's Churchyard Gardens.
Southwark's John Harvard Library occupies the footprint at 211 Borough High Street.
Dickens later set Little Dorrit on this ground.
The wall is the part a visitor can still put a hand on.
