Biography | Coco Chanel — Born at the Hospice Général on Rue Seigneur
kevin
People treat Coco Chanel as a Paris invention.
The first pin is a provincial hospice.
Gabrielle was born here on 19 August 1883, in the Hospice Général of Saumur, then on rue des Boires, now rue Seigneur.
The register listed her as Gabrielle Chasnel.
The extra s was a clerk's error.
Jeanne Devolle, a laundrywoman of nineteen from Courpière, came to the hospice alone.
Henri-Albert Chanel, a pedlar from Nîmes, was recorded as traveling.
The couple lived at 29 rue Saint-Jean and were not yet married.
They married on 17 November 1884 in Courpière, when the child was fifteen months old.
A hospital employee, Joséphine Pèlerin, declared the birth the next day with two colleagues who could not write.
The Saumur register, as cited in later biographies, gives the hour as four in the afternoon.
The child was baptized in the hospice chapel.
The name on the civil act stayed Chasnel.
She later left the spelling uncorrected, because a legal change would have published the poorhouse origin she spent decades rewriting.
The 1869 hospital buildings on rue Seigneur replaced an older Hôtel-Dieu in the Nantilly quarter.
Those older buildings, including the first chapel, had already been demolished.
The general hospital later moved again, to the route de Fontevraud site completed in 1996.
What still stands at 4 rue Seigneur is an outpatient clinic of the same hospital family.
It is not a Chanel museum.
The pin is the hospice street of 1883, not the château and not the later stair at 31 rue Cambon.
