People treat this façade as the room Dante was born in.

It is not.

Durante di Alighiero degli Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265, under Gemini.

His own poem later places the birth in that sign.

Boccaccio recorded a Ravenna notary’s story that the dying man counted his age from May.

The window most scholars keep is mid-May to mid-June.

The house that stood in the parish of San Martino del Vescovo is gone.

What you walk into at Via Santa Margherita 1 is a reconstruction opened as a museum in 1910, on the block the Alighieri family is documented as holding.

The Comune and the Società Dantesca Italiana built it as a civic memory, not as a recovered nursery.

Stand here for the parish, not for a cradle.

Florence in 1265 was a Guelf city still digesting the Ghibelline defeat at Benevento the year before.

The infant who later signed himself Dante grew up a few minutes’ walk from the Baptistery that every Florentine child entered.

The later Comedy would remember that font more clearly than any domestic room.

The museum’s rooms now hold editions, casts, and a model of medieval Florence.

They do not hold the original walls.

That honesty is the pin.

A life that ends in Ravenna starts on a street whose name the city later gave to a reconstruction.
