People who meet Massimo Calvelli through the ATP or AC Milan tend to place him in London boardrooms or San Siro corridors.

The record starts in a different square.

He was born on 16 November 1974 in Montevarchi, a Valdarno town in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany.

English-language and Italian sports biographies agree on that date and that town.

The civic heart of Montevarchi is Piazza Vittorio Veneto, with the medieval cassero rising off one side.

The family house is not a public site, and this pin stays on the piazza for that reason.

What the town did give him is tennis.

Later Italian coverage of his executive career places his junior years on the courts of Tennis Club Montevarchi, on Via Maestri del Lavoro at the edge of town.

By his mid-teens he was good enough to represent Italy at youth level.

In January 1991 he reached the boys' singles semi-finals of the Australian Open.

He turned professional in 1992.

His highest ATP singles ranking was No. 255, on 12 June 1995.

That same season he won a first-round match at the Bologna ATP event against Vincent Spadea, then ranked 56 in the world.

Career prize money on the tour was $14,375.

The playing years were short, and they ran alongside a law degree at the University of Florence.
