Biography | Mukesh Ambani — Born in Aden While His Father Worked the Port

Readers who place Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai from the first breath have the story backwards.
He was born on 19 April 1957 in Aden, then a British crown colony at the mouth of the Red Sea, to Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani.
Britannica and CNN both record the date and the city. The exact hospital or house has not been published with a source a visitor can check, so this pin sits on the harbour that made Aden worth living in.
Dhirubhai had gone to Aden after 1948 to work for A. Besse and Co., the trading house that ran Shell pumps and bunkering in the port. He was not yet a mill owner. He was a clerk in a coaling station that fed ships between Suez and Bombay.
Aden in 1957 was still a Crown Colony, not yet part of South Yemen. The family did not stay.
Britannica records that the political climate was turning and that they relocated in 1958 to the Bhuleshwar neighbourhood of Bombay, into a chawl, while Dhirubhai opened a yarn-trading desk that later became Reliance.
The boy who would run the largest private company in India therefore spent only his first year in Arabia. Everything after that is a Mumbai story.
What the harbour explains is the origin of the family habit: follow the cargo, then own the plant that makes it. Aden taught Dhirubhai the middleman trade. Mumbai gave his eldest son the factories.
The port is still there. The colony is not. The birth record sits in a jurisdiction that has changed names twice since 1957, which is why the hospital never made the plaques.
