Biography | Plato — The Garden by the Mouseion Where the Academy Buried Him

People treat the Academy as a school that outlived its founder without a grave.

The burial was inside the same precinct.

Diogenes Laertius already said Plato was buried in the Academy. A 2024 reading of Philodemus's History of the Academy, from a carbonised Herculaneum roll, places the tomb in a private garden near the Mouseion, the shrine of the Muses that Plato had set up.

The reading of the verb for burial is not certain. The editor Kilian Fleischer has said so in public. The older tradition still holds.

He died in 348 or 347 BC, aged about eighty. Hermippus put the death at a wedding feast in the first year of the 108th Olympiad. The same papyrus says a fever.

Neanthes gave him eighty-four years. The numbers do not quite meet. The year is the fact this pin uses.

The archaeological park in Akadimia Platonos is the precinct. The Mouseion has not been identified stone by stone. Sulla cut the groves in 86 BC when his army took Athens.

The founding of the school is a separate pin in this park. This one is the last chapter.

What a visitor finds now are foundations, a later gymnasium, and a neighbourhood that kept the name. No marked grave has been excavated.

The park still sits northwest of the ancient Dipylon, outside the wall, on ground that was a gymnasium long before Plato bought a plot inside it. The afterlife of the school is another story. The body, if the sources are right, never left this enclosure.
