Biography|Simone Young — The Opera House Podium She Reached at Twenty-Four

The sails on Bennelong Point opened on 20 October 1973.

Simone Young was twelve.

She had already watched the shells go up from the Manly ferry, riding into the city with her father.

Her first concert in the finished house was soon afterwards: Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in Tchaikovsky's Sixth.

A dozen years later she was on the podium in the same building.

In 1983 she joined the Australian Opera as a répétiteur, the rehearsal pianist who coaches singers and sits with the score under Charles Mackerras, Richard Bonynge, Carlo Felice Cillario and Stuart Challender.

The conducting debut came in 1985, still at twenty-four, in The Mikado and The Little Mermaid.

In 1986 the company made her a resident conductor.

She was the first woman in that post, and the youngest person appointed to it.

The same year the official Australian of the Year awards named her Young Australian of the Year.

An Australia Council grant, and later a Churchill Fellowship and support from the Wagner Society, paid for the move to Europe.

Cologne Opera took her in 1987 as assistant to James Conlon, then as Kapellmeisterin.

The Opera House did not vanish from the story.

She came back as artistic director and chief conductor of Opera Australia from 2001 to 2003.

The board declined to renew the contract, citing the cost of her programming.

Hamburg signed her months later.

The pin is the public house on Bennelong Point, not a private address.

Opera Australia still performs inside this complex.

The building she watched rise is the building where the Australian career began.
