People treat Walt Disney as a California product who arrived already named for a mouse.
He was born here, in a carpenter's cottage on Chicago's Hermosa side, on 5 December 1901.
The address today is 2156 North Tripp Avenue.
In 1901 the number on the door was 1249 Tripp Avenue. Chicago renumbered the street in 1909.
Elias Disney took a city building permit on 23 November 1892 for an 18-by-28-foot wood cottage.
The figure on the permit was 800 dollars.
Flora Call Disney drew the plans. Roy O. Disney later said their mother bought the materials and their father put the house up.
Walter Elias Disney was born on the second floor.
He was the fourth child, after Herbert, Raymond, and Roy. Ruth followed two years later.
The family sold the lot on 10 February 1906 and left for a farm at Marceline, Missouri.
Walt was four.
A later Chicago landmark attempt in 1991 failed when the then-owner blocked designation.
Dina Benadon and Brent Young bought the cottage in 2013 for 169,000 dollars and opened it as The Walt Disney Birthplace, a restored heritage house rather than a private home.
The upstairs room is the point.
The block around it is still an ordinary Chicago residential street.
