Racing | Formula 1 | 1981 Spanish Grand Prix — Villeneuve Holds Four Cars Behind at Jarama

On 21 June 1981, the seventh round of the Formula One World Championship formed on the grid of the Circuito Permanente del Jarama north of Madrid, where Gilles Villeneuve started seventh in the number 27 Ferrari 126CK.

Jacques Laffite had put the Ligier-Matra on pole in 1:13.754, while the current Formula 1 archive records Alan Jones as the race’s fastest driver with a 1:17.818 lap on lap five.

Jones led the opening phase before leaving the road on lap 14, after which Villeneuve inherited a race whose shape depended on the contrast between his turbocharged Ferrari’s straight-line acceleration and the stronger cornering performance of the pursuing cars.

The independent race account records that Laffite repeatedly drew alongside out of the turns before the Ferrari accelerated clear, while John Watson, Carlos Reutemann, and Elio de Angelis remained close enough to form a five-car train through the final eighteen laps.

Villeneuve completed all 80 laps in 1:46:35.010, and Formula 1’s final classification places Laffite second at 0.220 seconds, Watson third at 0.580, Reutemann fourth at 1.010, and de Angelis fifth at 1.240.

No post-race penalty in the official classification changes that order, so the 1.240-second spread from first to fifth is a final-result fact rather than a reconstruction from video or a provisional timing screen.

The victory was Villeneuve’s sixth and final Formula 1 World Championship win, and it was also the last Formula 1 race held at Jarama, making the circuit the place of both a career endpoint and the end of Madrid’s first championship era.

The race used Jarama’s 3.312-kilometre 1980–1989 configuration, shortened from the earlier 3.404-kilometre course around the Bugatti and Pegio section, rather than the expanded 3.850-kilometre layout introduced in 1991.
