Biography | Winston Churchill — Born in This Ground-Floor Room at Blenheim Palace

He arrived in a small ground-floor room near the main entrance, the nearest bedroom the palace could give a premature labour.

Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was born at 1.30 a.m. on Monday, 30 November 1874.

His father was Lord Randolph Churchill, third surviving son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough.

His mother was Jennie Jerome, the American daughter of the New York financier Leonard Jerome.

They had married at the British Embassy in Paris on 15 April 1874.

The planned address for the birth was a house in Charles Street, Mayfair, still being fitted for a January child.

Jennie fell on Tuesday, 24 November, while walking with a shooting party on the estate, then took a rough ride back in a pony carriage.

Labour began on the Saturday night.

The Woodstock country doctor delivered the baby before the London obstetrician reached the house.

Lord Randolph wrote the same day that mother and child were well.

The room now shown as the birth room is that modest apartment off the Great Hall.

It is not one of the crimson state drawing rooms that later tourist copy invented.

Churchill never lived at Blenheim as a resident.

He came back as a grandson of the house, and later as the politician who could point to its gates.

The palace itself had been raised as a war memorial to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, after the 1704 battle that gave the building its name.

The infant born here inherited that story before he inherited any office.

The house is open. The room is on the public circuit. Stand in it and the scale of the rest of Blenheim becomes the point: this life started in a side room, not in the hall of tapestries.
