Biography | Michael Brune — The Shore Closed by Needles on This Barrier Island

People treat the Sierra Club years as the start of his environmental life. The first shock was closer to home, on this public stretch of Barnegat Peninsula.

Michael Brune grew up in Chadwick Beach, a few miles north of this state park, and went to school in Toms River.

Printed sources disagree on the birthday. Reprints of the Wikipedia stub give 24 August 1971. The Sierra Club's own staff page gives 26 August 1972.

What is not in dispute is the shore.

In early June 1988, New Jersey closed Island Beach State Park and Ortley Beach after medical waste, including vials that tested positive for HIV and hepatitis B, washed onto the sand.

The summer became known as the syringe tide. Tourism on the Jersey Shore took a reported billion-dollar hit.

Congress answered that autumn with the Medical Waste Tracking Act and the Ocean Dumping Ban Act.

Brune was a teenager on this peninsula when the beaches shut. His later Sierra Club biography traces the organizer's first political education to neighbors who refused to let the closings pass as weather.

The house he grew up in is still a private address. This pin is the public park, not the lot.

Island Beach State Park remains the largest stretch of undeveloped barrier island left in New Jersey. The dunes and the bay side are what a visitor can walk without knocking on a door.
