Computing History | Eidelstedter Bürgerhaus — The Chaos Communication Congress Began

On December 27, 1984, the first Chaos Communication Congress opened inside the Eidelstedter Bürgerhaus, a neighborhood cultural center in Hamburg-Eidelstedt. The [Chaos Computer Club’s archived contemporary report](https://events.ccc.de/congress/1984/) begins that Thursday morning and describes six rooms joined by roughly eight kilometers of cable before the doors opened.

The meeting’s German motto, “CCC’84 nach Orion’64,” played on the television series *Raumpatrouille Orion*, but the work was grounded in ordinary home-computer culture. Visitors gathered around a “Hackcenter,” workshops and lectures, while an improvised congress mailbox struggled to function amid constant tinkering.

The most revealing demonstration came through a Commodore 64 connected by telephone to the DELPHI VAX system in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Participants used the link to explore a shared electronic conference with people in the United States, making global many-to-many communication visible in a room where such services were still unfamiliar and telephone charges remained a practical constraint.

That combination of repair bench, public lecture hall and network experiment helped define a durable model for hacker gatherings: technical curiosity discussed in public, tied to questions about communications systems and their social consequences. The CCC’s [official congress history](https://events.ccc.de/congress/) lists the 1984 meeting as the beginning of an annual series that later became a major European forum for security, privacy, cryptography and digital rights.

Its continuation was not yet guaranteed. The contemporary account closed by calling the gathering a success and predicting that it would probably not be the last, capturing the improvised origin of an institution before annual tradition made the outcome look inevitable.

The location is not a retrospective symbolic pin. [NDR’s historical report](https://www.ndr.de/fernsehen/sendungen/hamburg_journal/Hamburg-damals-Erstes-Treffen-des-Chaos-Computer-Club-1984%2Chamj154598.html) independently places the post-Christmas gathering in the Bürgerhaus Eidelstedt, and [Hamburg’s building history](https://www.hamburg.de/politik-und-verwaltung/behoerden/behoerde-fuer-stadtentwicklung-und-wohnen/aktuelles/pressemeldungen/2019-11-13-bsw-buergerhaus-eidelstedt-516148) records an 1878 former school converted into a cultural center in the 1980s. Today the renovated complex is called steeedt, but the original building remains part of the site.
