Racing|Formula 1|2000 Japanese Grand Prix — Schumacher Ends Ferrari's 21-Year Drivers' Title Wait at Suzuka
kevin
On 8 October 2000, Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen formed the front row at Suzuka for the penultimate round of the Formula One World Championship, separated in qualifying by only 0.009 seconds and carrying the drivers’ title fight into the same figure-eight circuit that had decided so many earlier seasons.
Schumacher arrived with an eight-point championship lead, so victory in the Ferrari number 3 would make the remaining Malaysian Grand Prix irrelevant to the drivers’ crown, while Häkkinen needed to keep the contest alive for McLaren Mercedes.
Häkkinen made the faster start and led through the opening stint, with Schumacher following closely enough that their first pit stops on laps 22 and 23 restored almost the same gap.
Light rain then made the 5.860-kilometre surface increasingly slippery, and the independent Grandprix.com report records Schumacher closing through traffic before Häkkinen made his second stop on lap 37.
Ferrari left Schumacher out for three more laps, and when he completed his stop on lap 40 he returned to the circuit approximately four seconds ahead, an advantage created during the changing conditions rather than by an on-track pass.
The official final classification records Schumacher completing all 53 laps in 1 hour 29 minutes 53.435 seconds, with Häkkinen second by 1.837 seconds and David Coulthard third for McLaren Mercedes, 69.914 seconds behind the winner.
Häkkinen set the race’s fastest lap in 1 minute 39.189 seconds on lap 26, while Schumacher’s ten points and Häkkinen’s six opened a twelve-point margin with only ten still available.
The result secured Schumacher’s third World Drivers’ Championship and his first with Ferrari, ending the team’s wait for a drivers’ champion that had lasted since Jody Scheckter won the 1979 title; Ferrari’s 2000 Constructors’ Championship was not secured until the following race in Malaysia.
Suzuka’s 2000 Grand Prix used the clockwise 5.860-kilometre configuration represented by the accompanying 1987–2002 diagram, before later alterations to 130R and the final chicane.
No later penalty or appeal was found that changed the official podium, so this memory records the final classification rather than a provisional finish.
