Racing|Formula 1|2001 Hungarian Grand Prix — Schumacher Clinches His Fourth Title at Hungaroring
kevin
On 19 August 2001, Michael Schumacher started the Hungarian Grand Prix from pole at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, where round 13 of the 17-race Formula One World Championship could settle both titles with four events still to run.
The official starting grid records Schumacher’s Ferrari on pole with a lap of 1 minute 14.059 seconds, ahead of David Coulthard’s McLaren Mercedes and Rubens Barrichello’s second Ferrari.
Barrichello moved ahead of Coulthard at the start, giving Ferrari control of the leading positions while Schumacher built a gap at the front.
Coulthard briefly displaced Barrichello through the first pit-stop sequence, but Barrichello regained second place during their later stops and remained ahead to the finish.
The final classification records Schumacher completing all 77 laps in 1 hour 41 minutes 49.675 seconds, with Barrichello second by 3.363 seconds and Coulthard third by 3.940 seconds.
Those ten points raised Schumacher to 94 against Coulthard’s 51, a 43-point lead with only 40 points still available, and therefore secured Schumacher’s fourth World Drivers’ Championship.
The victory was also Schumacher’s 51st in Formula One, equalling Alain Prost’s then-record total, while the Ferrari one-two secured the team’s 11th Constructors’ Championship.
Mika Häkkinen finished fifth and set the fastest lap, 1 minute 16.723 seconds on lap 51; no later penalty or appeal was found that changed the official podium.
The race used Hungaroring’s modified 1989–2002 configuration, a 3.975-kilometre permanent road course with 13 numbered corners, before the start-finish straight and final sector were altered for 2003.
