Racing | Formula 1 | 2002 French Grand Prix — Schumacher Secures His Fifth Title at Magny-Cours

Five laps from the finish at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours on 21 July 2002, Michael Schumacher reached the moment that could settle the Formula One drivers’ championship earlier than anyone had managed before.

The Mobil 1 Grand Prix de France was the eleventh of seventeen rounds, run for 72 laps on Magny-Cours’s 4.250 km, 15-turn 1992–2002 Grand Prix configuration, a layout whose long Golf straight ended at the tight Adelaide hairpin before the lap folded back through the Nürburgring and Imola sections.

Juan Pablo Montoya started from pole, but Schumacher’s Ferrari had the stronger race pace and moved ahead through the first pit-stop sequence before a drive-through penalty for crossing the white line at the pit exit dropped him behind Montoya and Kimi Räikkönen.

Montoya’s challenge receded after his second stop, leaving Räikkönen’s McLaren in front and Schumacher close behind, while the independent contemporary report also records that David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher received penalties for the same pit-exit infringement.

On lap 68, after Allan McNish’s Toyota left oil at the Adelaide braking zone, Räikkönen ran wide there and Schumacher passed; the official classification records Schumacher completing the 72 laps in 1:32:09.837, with Räikkönen second by 1.105 seconds and Coulthard third by 31.976 seconds.

The ten points lifted Schumacher to 96, 62 ahead of Montoya with only 60 still available across the remaining six races, so the victory secured his fifth World Drivers’ Championship and matched Juan Manuel Fangio’s then-record total.

Magny-Cours therefore anchored both a decisive racing result and a championship record: the title was settled at the circuit on the final Formula One appearance of this configuration, before the Lycée section was revised for 2003.
