Hanzawa Naoki | 阪急うめだ本店 Hankyu Umeda Main Store — Where Five Hundred Million Yen Became a War

A five-hundred-million-yen loan collapses, and 東京中央銀行大阪西支店 Tokyo Chuo Bank Osaka West Branch becomes the place where Hanzawa is ordered to absorb the blame. The branch exterior is not a bank at all. It is 阪急うめだ本店 Hankyu Umeda Main Store, the huge department store facing the rush of Osaka-Umeda Station.

The substitution works because the building has the scale and polish of corporate authority. In the drama, that façade contains hurried reports, concealed responsibility and the first full force of “倍返し.” In reality, shoppers stream through the doors and traffic turns beneath the tower. The ordinary movement makes Hanzawa’s isolation sharper: a crisis capable of destroying his career is invisible to the city around him.

Visit as a customer or view the exterior from the public crossings, but remember that the real store is not a drama exhibit and its staff are at work. Pause where the whole façade comes into view. This is where an amount on a balance sheet became a personal war.
