黒い安山岩の外壁に白い鎧戸が並び、その手前を幾何学式の薔薇園が段状に下る。[舞台資料](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%AB-Furukawa_Gardens#Popular_culture)では、旧古河庭園の洋館と庭園が『うみねこのなく頃に』に登場するゲストハウスのモデルとして記録されている。六軒島そのものが実在するという意味ではなく、現地で確かめられるのは、閉ざされた島の物語を形づくった建物と庭園の一部分だ。
[大谷美術館](https://www.otanimuseum.or.jp/)によれば、洋館はジョサイア・コンドルの設計で1917年に竣工した。[東京都公式観光サイト](https://www.gotokyo.org/en/spot/421/index.html)が案内するように、丘の上に洋館、中段に西洋式の薔薇園、その下に日本庭園が重なる。この高低差が、優雅な外観の奥に別の層が潜む作品の空気とよく響く。2009年7月1日は、[テレビアニメ版の放送開始日](https://bgm.tv/subject/1377)である。
正面の園路に立つと、左右一対の切妻屋根、中央へ上がる石段、濃い壁面を縁取る白い鎧戸が同時に見える。季節には、その厳格な左右対称の手前で赤や白の薔薇だけが不規則に揺れる。
