Personal Taste|Rakgojae — The Gate They Called Sanggojae

The gate on Gyedong-gil is quieter than the cameras made it.

In Personal Taste the house is Sanggojae, the renovated hanok Park Gae-in inherited from an architect father and then rented, room by room, to a stranger she thought was safe. The real timber and tile belong to Rakgojae, a 130-year-old compound in Gahoe-dong that still takes overnight guests.

Stand at the stone threshold and the plot collapses into a practical problem. A furniture designer needed a roommate. An architect needed a traditional house to study. They met at this door.

The interiors that filled sixteen episodes were built on a Yangju set. What you can still touch in Seoul is the exterior the drama used for arrivals, arguments, and the last look back. The pine in the yard, the jar stand, the raised wooden floor under the eaves — those are the pieces the lens kept returning to.

VisitKorea lists the address as 49-23 Gyedong-gil, Jongno-gu. The hotel books under Gahoe-dong 218. Both names land you at the same gate. Do not treat the courtyard as a free set. Book a stay or keep to the public lane and photograph the wall from the street.

Personal Taste premiered on MBC on 31 March 2010. The house outlasted the misunderstanding that made the series work. You leave with the same fact Gae-in kept ignoring: a door this old does not care who you pretend to be on the other side of it.
